How Should I Care For My New Tattoo or Piercing?

  • Tattoos: Gently wash the tattooed area twice a day with mild, fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water. Pat the area dry with a clean paper towel. This is crucial as it prevents infection and removes any excess ink, blood, and ointment. Avoid soaking the tattoo in water (like in baths, pools, or hot tubs) and direct streams of water on it during the initial healing period.
  • Piercings: Rinse the piercing with saline solution or gentle soap recommended by your piercer. It’s best to clean the piercing two to three times a day, but do not over-clean as this can irritate the skin and delay healing. Avoid touching the piercing with dirty hands.

  • Tattoos: After washing, apply a thin layer of fragrance-free moisturizing ointment, as recommended by your tattoo artist. Products specifically designed for tattoo care are preferable as they are formulated to enhance healing. Avoid products containing petroleum or alcohol, as they can cause irritation and leach color from the tattoo.
  • Piercings: Apply a saline spray or use a saline solution soak for a few minutes to cleanse and soothe the area. Avoid using alcohol-based or hydrogen peroxide products as these can dry out and irritate the skin. Always ensure that any product used is hypoallergenic to avoid allergic reactions.

  • Tattoos: Keep the new tattoo out of direct sunlight for several weeks. Sun exposure can fade the ink and prolong healing. Once healed, use a high-SPF sunscreen to protect the tattoo from UV rays. Also, wear loose clothing over the tattoo to prevent irritation and avoid environmental contaminants.
  • Piercings: Protect piercings from excessive sunlight and avoid applying makeup, lotions, or perfumes around the area. These substances can clog the piercing or cause unnecessary irritation. For oral piercings, avoid spicy foods, alcohol, and smoking to reduce irritation and the risk of infection.

  • Tattoos: Normal healing symptoms include mild redness, peeling, and itchiness. If you notice excessive swelling, pus, or worsening pain, it might indicate an infection, and you should consult a professional. Tattoos usually take 2 to 4 weeks to heal superficially and up to a few months to heal completely.
  • Piercings: It’s normal to experience some swelling, redness, and a small amount of discharge. However, persistent symptoms or any signs of fever, severe pain, or dark, foul-smelling discharge require immediate attention from a healthcare provider. Healing times can vary significantly depending on the location of the piercing.
